Day 5 - Oaxaca
A day of adventure awaits us as we take a full day tour of Oaxaca, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this city has so much to offer.

We start our day at the Mitla ruins, an important archeological site which has tombs for both Zapotec and Mixtec cultures, and its intricate stone mosaics are truly spectacular.

Our next stop is Hierve el Agua. Heirve in Spanish means to boil so you’d expect to see hot water boiling over the side of the mountain but not so, instead, Hierve el Agua is a stunning natural rock formation where minerals resemble cascading waterfalls down the side of the cliff to the valley below….it’s absolutely amazing.

Before we stop for lunch at a Zapotecan family home, we’ll visit Tule Tree, a 1500 year old tree that’s over 11 meters wide. You need to see it to take in the magnificence of its size.

After a delicious lunch we have the chance to sample some of the famous, tequila-like local liquor, mezcal made from the agave plant…an acquired taste!

Later, learn about a tradition not many have the opportunity to witness when visiting Oaxaca - beeswax candle making. We’ll visit a local shop that keeps this tradition alive to learn about the technique involved in making these delicate candles, have a try if you wish.

The rest of the day is free to relax and enjoy.

Day 6 -San Cristobal de las Casas
After breakfast we head to the airport to Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of the Chiapas state in southern Mexico.

Upon landing, we’ll be met by private transport as we head off to the Sumidero Canyon, an 800-metre deep canyon and World Heritage Site.

Whilst the canyon is the main attraction, it’s best seen from below and by boat. There are some areas of the canyon that you’ll see as you head down Grijalva River, where the canyon is over 1,000 meters tall – that’s over 3,000 feet high!

We then head to our hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas early evening. The rest of the evening is free for you take in the distinctive old worldly feel courtesy of the Spanish colonial architecture and pretty, cobbled streets.

Hotel: Casa Mexicana

Day 7 -San Cristobal de las Casas
After breakfast we head to the Mayan villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan. Nestled in the highlands, these villages serve as marketplaces and religious ceremonial centres for the native people who live in the surrounding hills.

The local people have retained their traditional way of life and are often seen dressed in their own distinctive colourful costumes. As we explore these villages our guide will tell us about the culture, traditions and history of these Mayan communities.

After a delicious Chiapanecan lunch the rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore this magical town.

Hotel: Casa Mexicana

Day 8 - Merida
Today we take a flight to the Yucatan peninsula, one of the most famous states in the country and home to some of the kindest people you will ever meet. Our private transfer will be waiting to escort us to the hotel in the heart of this historic city where we can freshen up before heading out.

Since the Spanish conquest, Mérida has been the cultural capital of the entire Yucatán Peninsula. A delightful blend of provincial and cosmopolitan, it is a town steeped in colonial history.

We’ll stroll down the narrow streets a mixture of sherbet pink, mint greet and vibrant peach in colour, pass the San Ildefonso Cathedral, pass colonial buildings and learn more about the Maya heritage.

Another culinary experience awaits us this evening at La Chaya Maya, one of the oldest places in town and popular with many of the locals. This city probably competes the most with Oaxaca for the best food in the country. Tonight, we will be the judge!

Hotel: Mision de Fray Diego

Day 9 - Rio Lagartos
It’s an early start as we head to one of the best sights in the Yucatan Peninsula- Rio Lagartos. We’ll board a small boat and discover some secret beaches, see a variety of coastal birds and depending on the season (usually Nov-Mar), we may get to witness thousands of flamingos painting a pink streak across the landscape.

After a swim in the pink waters we’ll pay a visit to a small natural, white clay beach, the perfect place to exfoliate so our skin feels soft, smooth and de-aged!

After another delicious lunch, we’ll return to Merida for a free evening at leisure.

Hotel: Mision de Fray Diego

Meals:  Breakfast & Lunch

Day 10 - Playa del Carmen
After breakfast we’re heading to Chichen Itza, the most famous Maya site in Mexico which has the most incredible range buildings than any other Mayan ancient city.

We'll visit the impressive Temple of Kukulkan standing an imposing 75 feet over the ruins. Originally built for astronomical purposes as when the light in the autumn and spring equinox’s shone at a certain time, the shadow revealed a huge serpents head at the foot of the stairs.

Not far from the temple is the ‘ballcourt’, where many disputes are known to have been settled by way of a ball game that used only the elbows, hips and wrists.

Following a guided tour of the site, we'll continue to the colonial and lively town of Valladolid and wander around the town’s charming colonial churches and interesting architecture before heading to Playa del Carmen, aka paradise!

After checking into our hotel and taking some time to relax, we’ll head out to a local restaurant for our last meal on this magical tour.
