A full day of exploring is on the menu for today as we dive deep in to the capital’s most popular sights.

Tiananmen Square – apparently the largest down town square in the world, and the imposing Forbidden City, former home to China’s imperial rulers and filled with palaces, gardens and seemingly never-ending grand courtyards. Afterwards we will head to Jinshan Park for a birds’ eye view of the golden roofs.

There are many pockets in which to discover the nation’s ancient roots and after lunch we’ll visit an area known for its hutongs (narrow streets and alleys) and get a unique and fascinating insight into how the locals live.

Although Beijing is modernising rapidly its contemporary culture is a huge source of fascination in itself.

The evening is yours to carry on exploring, relax at the hotel or find a cafe to soak up your surroundings.

After lunch we visit the extensive Summer Palace, once an imperial residence and now it has the largest and best preserved gardens in China. As far back as the Jin dynasty, the Summer Palace was used as a spot for retreat and relaxation but it was during the late Qing dynasty and the regency of Empress Dowager Cixi that it gained its current grandeur.

Day 4 - Beijing
This morning we visit the Temple of Heaven Park – a masterpiece of Chinese architecture, set in absolutely beautiful surroundings and one of the most popular parks in Beijing.

Many people of all ages take part in traditional pastimes here such as tai chi, fan dancing, diablo, kite flying and this morning we have our own private Tai Chi lesson to practice this ancient tradition.

In China, calligraphy occupies a distinguished position in the field of traditional art and is not only a means of communication but also it expresses a person’s inner world in an aesthetic sense. Ancient Chinese people paid great attention to calligraphy as they believed it to be a silent reflection of the soul, and this afternoon we will have a private lesson from a traditional master.

All of this concentration builds up an appetite and late afternoon we head to the Old Gulou Dajie district for an evening foodie tour to sample the many local delights and learn about the Chinese culinary skills and its secret ingredients.

Our 2 hour bus ride is rewarded with Xi’an’s most famous site, the Terracotta Warriors, considered to be one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th Century.

Over 6000 statues were individually sculpted from clay, each having a different costume, height, even facial expression. They are standing in battle formation, facing east in order to protect the tomb of China’s first emperor, the great Qin Shihuang and were only recently discovered by farmers in 1974 who were digging a well.

After lunch we explore what was once the start of the ancient trading route of the Silk Road and the Bell & Drum Towers, which according to legend were built to restrain the dragons that were causing earthquakes!

We’ll wander through the narrow streets with its quaint shops, lively markets and the Great Mosque, one of the most important Mosques in China where we’ll stop for some snacks.

Chengdu is the capital of the Sichuan province and although one of China’s biggest cities, it has preserved its traditional character and you can still find teahouses, traditional markets and the distinctive flavours that make Sichuan a must for getting to the heart of Chinese cuisine.

We first head to Tianfu Square, where the giant statue of Chairman Mao stands 105 feet tall. We have time to relax in People’s Park – a lush 112,600 square metres of heritage landmarks where we sample the amazing Chengdu tea in a traditional tea ceremony.

Don’t be surprised if somebody comes up to you with an offer of cleaning your ears, it’s apparently quite the normal thing to do here!

This evening we sit down to a truly authentic Sichuan hotpot, known in Sichuan as ‘huo guo’ (which roughly translates to ‘fire pot’). It’s a spiced broth where everyone can select their own ingredients to be cooked into a delicious hot meal.

This morning we wander through the centre of Shanghai taking in some of the historical sights and gardens, as well as wandering through the busy shopping areas, which we’ll have time to go back to this afternoon!

Yuyuan Garden is the only fully restored classical Chinese garden in Shanghai, combining several different elements to create a world in miniature – ingeniously mingling pavilions and corridors, small hills and carefully selected and well-placed rocks, lotus ponds, bridges, winding paths, and trees and shrubs…beautiful to see.

The rest of the afternoon is free to do some shopping in Nanjing road, sit in one of the many cafes or explore this vibrant and energetic city some more.
