Turkey Tour Itinerary*:

Day 1 - Arrival in Istanbul
Welcome to Turkey and the cosmopolitan city of Istanbul.

Your driver will meet you at the airport and take you through this bustling metropolis to your hotel. Relax, freshen up before you head to your 1pm welcome meeting and get to fellow voyageurs a little better.

After the meeting you have a few hours free, so maybe take a stroll around this energetic city, or head to the nearest cafe and have a chat over a Turkish coffee and slice of baklava.

This evening we’re going to a Turkish Meze restaurant, the first of it’s kind in Istanbul.

Sample the many dishes on offer from shrimp casserole, calamari or a lamb kebab to tasty grilled eggplant salad.

Day 2 - Istanbul
Enjoy a relaxing breakfast before we head out on our full day ahead.

Starting at the Hagia Sophia Museum, which after being used as a church for 916 years was then converted in a mosque. We’ll visit the scene where many chariot races took place in the ancient hippodrome, walk through the Grand Bazaar one of the oldest and largest in the world and stand in awe at the Suleymaniye Mosque, the second largest in the city.

We take a pause for lunch in a local restaurant to refuel before heading to the Faith district to waken our sensory organs at the colourful spice market. This evening we experience a full on Evening Tasting Trail.

Starting with borek, a delicious flaky pastry filled with cheese, potato, or meat washed down with a cup of ayran, a yogurt drink that’s considered by many to be the national beverage of Turkey.

We feast on a range of meze dishes served with a glass of raki as we learn about the fascinating history of these dishes. we taste içli kofte (deep-fried meat balls) and midye dolma (mussels stuffed with rice), the Islik famous burger, Turkish delight and not forgetting the local baklava.

We finish our evening in a popular district that’s famous for it’s awesome street art and graffiti.

The rest of the evening is yours to remain in the alfresco cafe chatting to your new girlfriends soaking up the night time vibes of Istanbul.

Day 3 - Bursa
It’s the ultimate in pampering this morning as we head to the famous Kilic Ali Pasha Hamam, an impressive building with the 17metre dome in the centre of the hamam.

After being scrubbed, massaged and rejuvenated, our private transfer takes us to our next stop, Bursa a lush green city surrounded by mountains.

A quick freshen up at the hotel and on to a spiritual Whirling Dervish show inside a specially prepared local lodge. Whirling dervishes perform a dance called the sema. It’s a religious dance performed to express emotion and achieve wisdom and love.

Whilst watching this spectacular show in a special women’s section you will be treated to some excellent local dishes.

Day 4 - Selcuk
After breakfast we have a 5 hour drive to Selcuk to experience the ‘real’ Turkey where many of the old Turkish traditions still remain today.

Freshen up at the hotel and this afterboon we visit The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus which was built in the 6th century BCE, and such was so huge it doubled the sizes of all the other Greek temples including the Parthenon, that it was soon regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.

In the evening we learn the secrets of Turkish cooking in a class run by Mrs Mujde in her own home, and of course get to enjoy the fruits of our work as we eat, chat and drink the night away.

Day 5 - Selcuk
Prepare for history lesson today as we make our way to Ayasoluk Hills to visit several historical buildings.

First the impressive Isa Bey Mosque, the Byzantine Citadel of the Grand Fortress, Basilicia of St John which is said to have been built over the supposed burial site of John the Apostle, and lastly the Ephesus site.

After more than 150 years of excavation, it is said to be Europe‘s most complete ancient city. Now for a well deserved lunch we’re being shown how to make the perfect Turkish Pancake (Gozleme) by the local ladies of Selcuk …So good!

The rest of the evening is yours to relax in hotel pool, walk around the city or find a cafe with your fellow voyageurs.

Day 6 - Fethiye
After a leisurely breakfast travel further south (about 4 hours) to the port city of Fethiye known for its natural harbour, aqua blue waters and its numerous rock tombs.

After sitting for so long we get to move and stretch our bodies with a private yoga class at the hotel.

The evening is yours to explore at your leisure with your fellow Voyageurs.

Day 7 - Fethiye
Today we enjoy the sparkling azure seas of the Aegean. As we step aboard our boat for the day the hospitality already apparent from this humble husband and wife team.

Sailing between the magnificent turquoise bays we are treated to snacks, coffee and juices.

This is a day to relax, swim, snorkel and be served a range of delicious Turkish food, fish, salads and fruits. All you need to do is turn up!

Day 8 - Fethiye/Pamukkale
After breakfast, we head to the captivating Salda Lake, an area which has gained the reputation of being the Turkish Maldives because of its perfect white beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters.

Then we head to Pamukkale. A trip to Turkey is not complete without a visit to Pamukkale, one of Turkey’s most photographed places. Pamukkale, which literally translates to ‘cotton castle’, is home to 17 spectacular natural hot springs which cascade over the edge of the cliffs.

Bathing in these pools is forbidden but we are lucky enough to be invited to the travertine pools, fed by the same hot springs where we can bathe in the healing waters, the very same that Cleopatra once swam.

The rest of the day is yours to relax, explore or spend with your new girlfriends.

Day 9 - Pumukkale - Konya
After breakfast we leave this amazing hotel and travel about 5 hours south to a village just outside of Konya called Sille, where a rock face cave dwellings overlook a valley of bendy-beamed village houses with flowerpots overflowing with pansies.

Sille is just a really cute town with two Byzantine churches, St. Helena’ which has an interior covered with colourful frescoes and Küçük Kilise which now functions as a museum dedicated to clocks.

We have lunch in a local restaurant and then the rest of the day is yours to explore.

Day 10 - Cappadocia
Phallic rocks, fairy chimneys and underground cities, Cappadocia has it all. After a delicious breakfast, we are heading inland to explore Kaymakli one of the 36 rabbit-warren metropolises that were lovingly carved into the earth by the Hittites around 500 years ago.

The Kaymaklı people built this magnificent underground city around their homes for security reasons with special secret tunnels that connected to them. If an attack happened, they could temporarily use this underground masterpiece to protect themselves.

This evening we have been invited to a local family home for a traditional dinner.

Day 11 - Cappadocia
This morning you have the option of experiencing a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the stunning and unearthly landscape of Cappadocia, the scenery is so mystical you may even think you’ve travelled to a different planet! (This ride can only be booked locally so see your group leader if you would like to book this.)

Even if you don’t take the ride, it’s definitely worth getting up for just to see the the stunning sunrise with dozens of balloons floating in the air.

Lunch today is at a women’s cooperative followed by a hike around the Pasabag Valley which is famous for some of the most striking fairy chimneys in Cappadocia.

Day 12 - Istanbul
Have a relaxed morning before leaving for the airport for our midday flight back to Istanbul.

This afternoon we have an Ebru (paper marbling) workshop. Ebru is the traditional method of creating colourful patterns by sprinkling and brushing colour pigments on a pan of oily water and then transforming this pattern to a special paper.

Tonight we are going to have our last meal in a local Meyhane (a Turkish Tavern), which is not just a restaurant but an experience that dates back thousands of years.

It’s a place where traditionally people come together for great conversation, meze and a few glasses of raki, a perfect way to end this magical tour where you met as strangers and leave as the best of friends.

Day 13 - Depart from Istanbul
After breakfast and your farewells, it’s time to leave for the airport.

You’ve sampled the best cuisine Turkey has to offer, walked through ancient grounds, bathed in the same waters Cleopatra swam in, discovered underground cities and been witness to some of the most breathtaking scenery you may ever see.

From Whiling Dervish’s to The Turkish Maldives Turkey will not disappoint!
